If 75% are doing it, is it really alternative?

According to Bike Portland:
A survey released last week shows that three in four students and employees at the campus get there without a car. A press release about the survey issued by PSU proclaimed that, "Cars are alternative transportation for students and staff at PSU."
At First Stop Portland, we sure are proud of all that PSU has done to encourage staff and students to leave their cars at home, but we don't think there's anything alternative about people choosing transit or bicycles to move about their city. Through our study tours, we promote the idea of "transportation options," which suggests that in an equitable, livable, sustainable city, people have access to many low-impact ways of moving about the city and they are free to choose the best means possible for their particular needs..
